Earthquakes & Volcano – Santorini, Greece 2025

One of the most talked and trending topics was the earthquakes in Santorini, Greece.

First of all before I write anything on this topic I want you to consider that Santorini is the No1 touristic destination in Greece and has more than 40.000 legal businesses constituting in more than 3% of the growth domestic product of the country.

More than 3.000.000 tourists are being welcomed in our Island.

Why am I writing these facts in our earthquakes article? Because of course based on this we conclude that the media and the news are attracted to make a story a bit bigger than it is in reality for a destination where it draws attention the most.

Caution ! I am not saying that the earthquakes were not taking place in Santorini, Greece!

The recent earthquake activity in Santorini was indeed unique, something we hadn’t experienced before. Let’s clear a few things up : there was never any evacuation in Santorini. That’s a tricky word to throw around and it simply never happened as Ferries kept operating normally, flights kept arriving and many locals stayed on the Island. Yes most of the people chose to leave for a few days on their own, freely.

Not a single rock fell because of the earthquakes and not a single person was harmed. Just mentiong an earthquake by 1956 to compare situations is a tricky strategy too …

This made international headlines mostly because of where Santorini is located—right above the complex meeting point of the African and Eurasian tectonic plates, with additional influence from the Anatolian microplate. So yes, seismic activity is part of life here. It’s nothing new.

But don’t get me wrong , the frequency of what we experienced was unique!

We leave all of it back in the past , and we move forward by welcoming more and more people everyday to experience the magic of Santorini !
