Instead of choosing Athens for the classic winter city with it’s Acropolis views, architecture and well known must see spots , this guide highlights a different side of Greece.

Greece is not only a summer destination with beautiful beaches, blue waters and warm sunsets. These winter destinations combine nature, calm villages, lively ski towns , big city energy and hidden gems that create a refreshing and memorable winter escape.

  1. Arachova and mount Parnassus

How to get there: Arachova is about 2.5 hour drive from Athens. You can also catch a bus (KTEL) from Athens. There is no airport, but it is very convenient for you to spend a few days in Athens exploring the city and then the most flexible way is by car or bus. Visitors can ski or snowboard on the Mount of Parnassus, enjoy panoramic snowy walks and explore the charming stone-built village in the evenings with great restaurants and cozy cafes. At the same time they are organising parties on the mountain with sunbeds and house music as the weather in Greece is amazing and helps with these events.

2. Thessaloniki

How to get there: Thessaloniki has it’s own airport(international airport) with frequent flights from Athens and other European cities. You can also take the long-distance bus or driver that is about 5-6 hours from Athens. This big city by the sea welcomes winter with festive lights, seaside promenades and creative neighbourhoods. Visitors can enjoy long walks by the water, explore historic zones and relax in cafes or elegant rooftop bars. The food scene is excellent with many restaurants offering regional dishes and seafood. How to get there: Kalavryta is roughly 2.5 to 3 hours drive from Athens. There are also KTEL buses from Athens to Kalavryta or nearby towns. For part of the journey the old mountainous roads offer scenic views, but a personal car or a taxi may be more convenient especially during a heavy winter. Kalavryta offers a ski center on Mount Helmos which works well for beginners and intermediate skiers. Another highlight is the historic rack railway that passes through the dramatic Vouraikos Gorge , a memorable ride especially during winter when forests are dusted with snow. For a different kind of adventure, visitors can explore subterranean beauty at the cave of Lakes, combining winter sports with a bit of exploration.

4. Metsovo

How to get there: Metsovo is around 4-5 hours by car from Athens , you cross the mountain roads through Pindus. There are also KTEL buses from Athens to Ioannina and from there local transportation is convenient or taxi to Metsovo. This village gives a deep feeling of tradition and warmth. Visitors can stay in stone or wooden guesthouses, swim in inside pools, walk through narrow alleys, taste local cheeses and enjoy red wine by a fireplace. The nearby ski resort of Anilio offers slopes in a peaceful mountain environment. A slow lunch in a traditional tavern using local produce, or walk through snow-covered , feels like a true winter retreat.

5. Zagorochoria

How to get there: The drive from Athens or Thessalonii takes around 5-6 hours, the most convenient way is by car but there are Buses as well that take you there. Driving gives you the freedom to explore several villages and surrounding nature. Zagorochoria is a cluster of stone-built villages amidst dramatic landscapes. Winter here is calm and ideal for nature lovers. Visitors can hike to viewpoints over Vikos Gorge, cross ancient stone bridges, try cold season canyoning near rivers (weather permiting), or enjoy long restful stays in peaceful guesthouses with mountain views. A quiet village like Kapesovo is a hidden gem for those waiting solitude and authentic mountain architecture.
